There’s something magical about the stillness of a mountain lake at dawn. Upper Sardine Lake is one of those places where the air feels crisp, and the quiet seems almost sacred. Standing there, watching the first light of day dance across the water, I was struck by the reflections, the way the sky, the surrounding pines, and the distant mountains all meet on the water’s surface, creating a mirror that feels infinite.
In this painting, I used oil on canvas to explore that delicate balance between reality and perception. The challenge was capturing the subtle movements of water while maintaining a sense of calmness and stability. Every brushstroke became a meditation, a way to translate the experience of being in that moment into something that can be shared on canvas.

Beyond technique, painting this scene was about emotion. I wanted the viewer to feel the serenity I experienced: the cool air, the gentle lapping of water against the shore, and the quiet stillness that invites reflection. It’s fascinating how landscapes can evoke memories and emotions even for those who have never visited them, and I hope that Upper Sardine Lake does exactly that.
Art is not just about what we see, it’s about what we feel. For me, this piece is an invitation to pause, breathe, and reconnect with the simplicity and beauty of nature.
